Origin of Porcupine
River (West Kalimantan Folklore)
Once upon a time,
there lived a farmer and his wife. Though not rich, they like to help others.
One night, the farmer
was sitting on the bed. Beside him, his wife was already asleep. Suddenly he
was struck by a white centipede that comes from his wife's head. White
centipede was walking away from the farmer's house. The farmer was followed to
arrive at a pond not far from their home. Centipede was then disappears.
Farmers then walked home. His wife was still asleep.
The next morning, the
farmer's wife told his dream last night. "I was walking in the meadow, and
there is a lake there. I saw a giant hedgehog in the lake. He glared at me, so
I ran. "
The farmer then went
back to the pool. In it he saw a shiny object. He picked it up, it turns a
golden statue of the hedgehog. The statue is very beautiful, the eyes of the
diamond. Farmers take her home.
At night, the farmers
visited in his dreams a giant hedgehog. "Let me stay in your house. In
return, I will give you whatever you ask. "
Hedgehogs were taught
to wipe the golden hedgehog statue head and utter a sentence to ask for
something. If requested enough, farmers must say the sentence to stop it.
Farmers told his
dream to his wife. They want to prove that dream. Farmers rubbed the statue's
head and say the sentence request. He asked for rice. Instantly come out of the
mouth of a statue of rice! Rice continued to flow out to many. Farmers say the
second sentence immediately and stops the rice out of the mouth of a statue of
the hedgehog.
They both then asked
various objects they need. They became very rich. But they remain arrogant and
increasingly fond of help. Many people come to ask for help.
A thief privy

thief took the statue home. His village was hit by drought. The thief told his
neighbors that he could bring water to their village.
The thief pleaded
water, rubbing the statue's head and say the sentence request. The water came
out of the mouth of the statue. The villagers were very happy. Shortly
thereafter, the water that comes out is sufficient for the villagers, but it
continues to flow resulting in flooding. The thief does not know how to stop
the water coming out of the statue. Villagers to flee to higher ground.
Thieves also wanted
to escape, but could not move his legs. He saw a giant hedgehog holding his
leg. Eventually he was immersed in water higher and higher. The water then
forms a river called the river Hedgehog.
